Finding good people
You have choices - go out and find good people - or attract them.
Good people are out there and can be found, but good people are already employed, and not looking around unless they are seeking a change.
Each process is valid and has options within it. Finding good people is increasingly contracted out to specialised employment/recruitment agencies. Considerable material has been published on how to recruit people, and agencies are constantly testing new ways to find quality applicants.
An alternative view is to regard employees like customers - you try to attract and retain them. Consider customers - you want more of the higher value customers, visiting more often, spending even more per visit. This compacts down further to ‘get more customers’ and ‘increase the value per customer’.
That same approach can be made with employees - attract more quality employees, and increase the value of each employee. For the moment we are looking only at attracting better quality of employee.
It is with the backing of evidence that we can say that people are attracted to organisations by the objective climate (what they can see, read or hear about from trusted sources) and leave because of the subjective climate (what they ‘feel’ about working there).
This is where current employees are a good source of referral for future recruits. Evidence supports the quality of such recruits. It will only happen, however, if the current objective climate is good enough to attract future employees, and the current subjective climate is good enough to motivate current employees to actively recommend your organisation.

Setting up to attract good people takes time. It takes until people in the firm themselves believe that it is a great place to work. That doesn’t mean cushy - in fact most people want to succeed - the be appreciated and recognised for their achievements. Most people feel good after a challenging and interesting day, where they were treated and respected as colleagues.
Your own people can become you most effective recruitment agency.
