High Stress

As a symptom, stress needs to be looked at because the costs of stress can be in real dollars in terms of production quantity, efficiency or quality, or other forms of costs up to and including sabotage.  Costs can also be experienced by increased illness, absenteeism, and all the behavioural consequences of people pressured beyond their capacity.

Stress is a symptom of non-optimum stimulation - too much or too little.

If people are bored they can be stressed.  If people are overloaded they can be stressed.  If they are uncertain about their ability to do something considered important, they can be stressed.  If people are having problems in relating to others, they can be stressed.

And yet - up to a point, stress is good - exciting and challenging.  It’s that balance that can go wrong.  Fortunately, the extent and type of stress experienced in an organisation can be measured.  Armed with that information, stress reduction practices can be devised and where necessary, specific people may be helped.
