Supervisors - problems - heroes

This page is being rewritten

We regard Supervision as a special form of management where the supervisor is responsible for the actions of some person(s) - not only WHAT is done but how, when, and at what level of quality.  It implies that the supervisor is ‘watching’ to catch errors as they happen, rather than afterward as may happen in the normal management role.

Supervisors are in a unique position, because of the close association with their charges, to be either a cause of problems or a preventer of problems.  Supervisors at all hierarchical levels are on one hand the greatest source of stress, and on the other are the most important part of the employee coping mechanism.

There is a saying that goes something like “People join because of the job, and leave because of their Supervisor.”  The more scientific way of saying that is that people join an organisation because of its objective climate, and leave because of its subjective climate, and the largest single influence on local climate is the supervisor-member relationship.

People are usually not trained to be Supervisors.  It is probable that there is even less training on being a Supervisor than on being a Manager.

We provide on-site and off-site training in ‘Being a Supervisor’ - and tailor the programs to suit the supervisory expectations and different hierarchy levels.
